Filtered: Gamescom 09

I’ve been catching up on all of the announcements focusing on the PlayStation brand at Gamescom 09.  I’d like to share with you a list news items that have caught my eye and what I think about them:

  • PS3 Slim– About time!  The reduced price has been needed for months, the brand cleanup is a wise move, and Sony have finally found a voice with their marketing campaign!
  • LocoRoco Midnight Carnival– I’m a die-hard LocoRoco fan, and this upcoming PSN download looks really… well, fun!  New gameplay mechanics should keep things fresh.
  • PlayStation Home update– universal game launching from within Home looks quite compelling, but there are still numerous problems with accessing Home for some people: downloading areas, connection issues etc, that might prevent them from utilising this functionality.
  • Digital Comics Store for PSP– I’ve got to hand it to Sony- this looks pretty damn sweet!  Why has it taken this long though?!  Unfortunately though, it’s only for the US at the moment.  Boo.  Hiss.
  • New Uncharted 2 footage goes without saying *drools*
  • Firmware 3.0– Hopefully this should expose ‘what’s new’ on the PlayStation Store, and across the PlayStation Network, helping people feel more connected to the PlayStation community and kept up-to-date with what’s going on.  The rest of the firmware update is incidental in my opinion.
  • LittleBigPlanet Water!– This should be a very interesting new game mechanic, and may persuade me to visit LittleBigPlanet once again.

And that’s it!  If there’s anything I’ve missed, I’ve either forgotten about it, or I’m not really bothered about it.

An insight into how faulty PS3s are dealt with

The incident

At the weekend I was playing LittleBigPlanet but after I had completed a particular level, instead of the next one loading up the screen went totally white and the system seemed to freeze.  The PS3 then restarted and spat out the disc.  I’d had enough gaming for one night anyway, so I turned the system off and went away.

I came back to the PS3 the following day only to find that none of my PS3 disks would load.  It was the same with DVDs and CDs.  I have to admit, I then panicked.  But it was weird because apart from that, the rest of the PS3 worked totally fine.  I could play games that were on the hard disk, connect to the PlayStation Network, and browse the PlayStation Store.  But what use is a PS3 that won’t load game disks?

LittleBigPlanet Metal Gear Solid costume and level Packs: better than sliced bread

LittleBigPlanet Metal Gear Solid costume and level Packs: better than sliced bread– You know I’m absolutely going to get this!  Probably the first compelling reason to spend money on a LBP content pack is here.  Click the link and watch the video; I dare you not to be impressed (it also has 11 extra Trophies!).  I need to persuade my bro to do some multiplayer on LBP though, it looks so much fun…

The LBP Community shot me down

I’d like to start off by saying that first and foremost, my experience with LittleBigPlanet as a whole, and more specifically, the community, has been really good.  Great, in fact.  I’ve been making my way gingerly through the story mode; loving the visuals, level-design, and uniqueness of the whole LittleBigPlanet universe.  I’ve even ventured online properly, playing a couple of levels with other people, playing user-created levels and passing judgment.  Then I created my own level…

The rating system is out of 5 stars, then you can sum up what you think of the level with a one-word answer, which gets rid of any profanities I guess.  After doing a few story levels, I was itching to create something.  However, due to being away at University for most of the time, I admit it has taken much longer than I planned to get my first level out of the door.

After working my way through some of the tutorials, I started to piece my level together.  I admit though, that because I haven’t completed the whole story mode yet, I don’t exactly have a full list of parts to select from!  I created a fairly short level, named it “Life’s A Beach“, and provided a description saying something along the lines that it was my first level, please be kind. I put some sand castles in it, added a bit of humour, an obstacle or two, and offered some prizes.  Fairly reasonable, no?  So I uploaded the level…

I checked back a few hours later and my level received 3 stars- hooray!  But the words I got describing what people thought of the level was: horizontal, empty, rubbish.  Fair enough with the first one, probably the second as well, but rubbish?!  That struck me as being a bit mean.  I did state, didn’t I not, that it was my first-ever level?

I suppose what I’m after, Is some support here.  Of course, there are some great levels out there, and I’m just starting off with my first steps into LittleBigPlanet level creation, but was a label of ‘rubbish’ really required?  I’ve seen some pretty dire levels myself, but would never dream of labelling them rubbish.  I only go so far as calling them empty, or horizontal.  Am I being too nice here?!  I want answers dammit!

Any thoughts my fellow sack people?

Your LittleBigPlanet questions answered

Your LittleBigPlanet questions answered– In the first instalment of “SACK IT TO ME”…Weekly Answers to the LBP Community’s Questions, many topics are covered such as moderation, the state of the servers, and the ‘week 1 t-shirt’ issue.  It’s from an American perspective, but should an interesting read for LBP fans everywhere.

Sony promises better moderation system for LBP

Sony promises better moderation system for LBP– Good stuff, this is how it should be.  Deleting users’ created levels without any constructive feedback or explanation is just not on.  Hopefully there will be no more community problems like this again with LittleBigPlanet, as it is detracting from what is otherwise, a superb experience.

Hands-on with LittleBigPlanet

LittleBigPlanet is here, and gamers everywhere are giddy with excitement- and that’s just the adults!  Children are going to love this game, as in fact, will anyone really.  From what I’ve experienced, I can totally see how this can be a cult classic for the cool, hardcore gamers, but still be fun for all the family.

You’ll be glad to know that my woes with Amazon did not last long.  The package was waiting for me when I arrived home.  As I hadn’t been on my PS3 for quite some time, the usual formalities were required: download firmware update, install update, restart PS3.  Time for some LittleBigPlanet goodness then?  Apparently not: two updates needed to be downloaded and installed before I could so much as look at the loading screen.

LittleBigPlanet European TV spots are genius

LittleBigPlanet European TV spots are genius– Wasn’t too keen on the first one, but the second one ‘rocks’.  Get it?  Looks like marketing has found an excellent way of describing the undescribable, and communicating across what LittleBigPlanet is all about.  A job well done, I’d say.
